Australia is significantly increasing its defense spending in response to a more complex and threatening global landscape. Defense Minister Richard Marles announced plans to raise outlays to 3% of gross domestic product by 2033, up from approximately 2% currently.
The increase, representing an additional A$53 billion (US$38 billion) over the next decade, aims to realize the nation’s biggest peacetime spending increase by 2033. This decision comes as Australia responds to rising global conflict and China’s military buildup.
The evolving strategic landscape, particularly the situation in Iran, has greatly complicated the global outlook, prompting the need for increased investment in defense capabilities, including drones. Australia views the current circumstances as the most challenging since World War Two.
