President Donald Trump is once again attempting to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from her position. The White House informed Cook in a letter this week that the president is considering her removal over allegations of mortgage fraud.
This move follows a June Supreme Court decision that blocked an earlier attempt by the administration to oust Cook, asserting the Federal Reserve's status as an independent agency. Despite this ruling, the Trump administration is moving forward with efforts to fire Cook, who has denied the unproven allegations.
Trump aide Dan Scavino stated that there is sufficient reason to believe Cook made false statements on one or more mortgage agreements. Conversely, it has been argued that under the facts and Supreme Court precedent, there is no valid cause for removing Governor Cook.
This conflict is part of an unprecedented assault on the independence of the Federal Reserve during Trump's second term. The president has previously clashed with Federal Reserve members regarding his bid to rapidly slash interest rates despite inflation.
