Japan executed a 58-year-old man on Friday morning for killing five people in a fire he ignited at a pachinko parlor in Osaka 17 years ago. The execution marks the first under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's administration.

The convicted man, Sunao Takami, set fire to the crowded parlor in 2009. He doused the building, which was located near his home, with gasoline and petrol before throwing a lit match.

The resulting fire engulfed the building, killing four customers and one employee. In addition to the five deaths, the attack left 10 other people injured.
