Bob Mackie, the legendary fashion and costume designer known as the Designer to the Stars, died Monday in Palm Springs, California, at the age of 87. His career spanned five decades, during which his visually provocative Hollywood style defined glamour for the 1970s.

Dubbed the Sultan of Sequins for his eye-catching celebrity looks, Mackie created iconic and dazzling costumes for stars including Cher, Elton John, and Tina Turner. His extensive portfolio included sequined gowns for Diana Ross, as well as designs for Madonna, Streisand, Sharon Stone, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Pink. He was particularly known for putting Carol Burnett in some of her kookiest getups and Cher in her raciest ones.

Beyond his work for celebrities, Mackie designed a Barbie doll clothes collection. His professional achievements were recognized with nine Emmy Awards and a Tony Award, and he was nominated for three Oscars.
