Wildfires ravage southern Europe and threaten Tour de France stage

Wildfires in southwest France are threatening the third stage of the Tour de France scheduled for Monday. The forest fire has already ravaged more than 1,500 hectares, or 5.8 square miles, near the Pyrenees.

Cyclists are due to cross the finish line in Les Angles, which is located approximately 60 kilometres from the blaze. Officials are set to decide later Sunday whether the race can proceed.

The blaze is part of a wider wave of wildfires currently hitting six countries across southern Europe. Fuelled by extreme heat, these fires have forced evacuations and raised fears of a long and intense wildfire season.
