Court orders mushroom murderer Erin Patterson never to be released from prison

crime & law legal proceedings

An Australian appeals court has ruled that Erin Patterson will spend the rest of her life in prison without the possibility of parole. Patterson was convicted of killing three people, including her in-laws, who fell ill and died after consuming a beef Wellington lunch laced with death cap mushrooms in 2023.

The court ordered that she never be released due to the shocking criminality involved in the poisoning of four of her estranged husband's relatives. This ruling makes Patterson only the second woman in Australia to be imprisoned for life without the possibility of parole.

During the appeals process, Patterson's lawyers argued that errors during the trial led to an unfair conviction. Conversely, prosecutors argued that her 33-year minimum prison term was too lenient.
