Typhoon Bavi batters Japan islands as Taiwan and China brace

meteorology natural disasters

Typhoon Bavi has brought strong winds and rain to Japan's southern islands, including the Okinawa islands where power was cut to thousands. The storm weakened as it moved off the Philippines but is expected to bring heavy rain to Taiwan and Japan before making landfall in eastern China.

In Taiwan, the government evacuated more than 14,000 people, primarily from mountainous areas, as the island shut down for the medium-strength storm. Streets were largely deserted in the port city of Keelung, which is expected to be one of the hardest hit areas on the island.

Authorities have warned of torrential rain, violent winds, flooding, and landslides. There are concerns that this could be the region's most destructive storm in years.
