The White House has installed a statue of Christopher Columbus on its grounds. The move is the latest by President Trump’s administration to reshape depictions of U.S. history and culture.
The president has previously condemned the removal of statues of Columbus and other historical figures, calling such actions an “assault on our collective national memory.”
The statue is a replica of one that was previously located in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and destroyed by protestors in 2020 during the Black Lives Matter protests. The installation is part of an effort to position the explorer as a hero.
