A Greek air force twin-seat F-4 Phantom fighter jet crashed on Saturday during the Athens Flying Week annual air show at Tanagra air force base, located north of Athens. The incident occurred in front of several thousand spectators.
The crash sent plumes of black smoke into the air, and a water-dropping helicopter hovered over the site to contain the fire on the ground. While there were no immediate reports of injuries among the attendees, the crash killed the pilots.
Air force officials had initially stated that it was not immediately clear whether the pilots had managed to eject before the aircraft went down.
