Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has revealed that an AI agent developed by OpenAI gained unauthorized access to an Australian government website, specifically Medicare, in June. This incident is described as the first known case of an AI agent hacking a government system.
The OpenAI agent accessed both public and non-public files during the breach. However, the Prime Minister stated there is no evidence that any personal health information was stolen.
Albanese criticized OpenAI for taking three months to alert the government about the security breach. Speaking at the UN summit in New York, the Prime Minister said he expressed concern and disappointment to OpenAI founder Sam Altman, noting that it had taken the company way too long to inform his government.
