Polish authorities have arrested a Russian national allegedly recruited by secret services to assassinate a Ukrainian-American citizen in Warsaw. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the thwarting of the plot on Thursday, noting that the suspect was taken into custody on August 7.
The target of the planned attack was a Ukrainian-American citizen described by Tusk as someone who was uncomfortable for the Putin regime and a critic of Moscow.
Tusk highlighted the gravity of the incident, stating it is the first time that someone acting on the order of Russia has sought to attack a U.S. citizen on the territory of another NATO country. Poland, a NATO and EU member state along the alliance's Eastern flank, has accused Russia of sabotage on several occasions since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
