Poland thwarts unprecedented Russian plot to kill Ukrainian-US citizen

Polish authorities have arrested a Russian national who was allegedly recruited by Russian secret services to kill a Ukrainian-American citizen in Warsaw. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Thursday that security services successfully thwarted the assassination plot. A government spokesman confirmed the suspect was taken into custody on August 7.

Prime Minister Tusk stated that the Ukrainian-American citizen was uncomfortable for the Putin regime. He further noted that this incident marks the first time someone acting on the orders of Russia has sought to attack an American citizen on NATO territory.

Poland, a NATO and EU member state on the alliance's Eastern flank, has accused Russia of sabotage on several occasions since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
