Kimi Antonelli won the British Grand Prix sprint race for Mercedes, overtaking home favourite Lewis Hamilton to secure victory. Ferrari's Hamilton had started on pole position but was passed on the eighth of 17 laps, ultimately finishing second and 2.7 seconds behind the 19-year-old Italian.

Prior to the race, Hamilton had been the fastest in the sole practice session and secured pole position for the sprint. Hamilton noted that while Silverstone had not changed, he was ready for a British Grand Prix on a completely different track. The sprint grid also featured Antonelli in second and Red Bull's Max Verstappen in third.

Lando Norris of McLaren finished the race in third place, while Antonelli's teammate and closest championship rival, George Russell, finished fourth at a blustery Silverstone.

With a maximum of eight points for the sprint win, Antonelli has forged a 43-point lead in the Formula One standings. He now has 179 points, compared to 136 for Russell and 132 for the seven-times world champion Hamilton.
