A record-breaking heatwave that has disrupted daily life across the continent for more than a week has shifted east to scorch Hungary, Romania, and the Balkans. Italy and the Balkans felt the impact on Monday, with the extreme heat causing growing concerns over the spread of wildfires.
The heatwave has been responsible for shattering numerous temperature records across Western Europe and has caused hundreds of excess deaths. Older people remain the most at risk as the heatwave drives up excess deaths across Europe.
While the extreme heat is easing in Western Europe, Central Europe is now facing days of dangerous swelter. Warnings indicate that heat is likely to build again from the start of next week in places that recently had relief, including countries such as France and Germany.
