Democratic US Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing a series of controversies regarding his personal conduct as he nears the party primary in Maine. Reports have detailed allegations of unsettling and toxic behavior toward former romantic partners, including claims of physical intimidation and abuse. Additionally, his campaign has dealt with stories concerning sexually explicit messages Platner sent to several women while he was married.
Speaking before supporters in Bar Harbor, the oyster farmer and US marine combat veteran denied the accusations, stating that his past has been weaponized. Platner suggested that the negative headlines are actually a sign that his campaign is gaining momentum. Despite the reports, hundreds of supporters gave him a warm welcome on Friday, rebutting suggestions that he is the wrong candidate to take on GOP Senator Susan Collins.
The controversies are overshadowing other issues in a race considered crucial to Democratic hopes of flipping the Senate. As a result, some of Governor Janet Mills’ most ardent supporters are encouraging her to reactivate her suspended Senate campaign. For the Democratic Party, the path to the Maine primary has become one of dread.
