French wine production is expected to suffer a significant decline following a summer of scorching temperatures, heatwaves, and severe drought. According to the agriculture ministry, output is forecast to drop by 6 percent, potentially marking a 30-year low or the worst harvest in some 70 years. Initial estimates suggest winemakers will produce just under 34 million hectolitres, which is 17 percent less than the 2021-2025 average.
The Champagne region has been particularly affected, with output set to halve after a summer of extreme weather. In addition to the reduced yields, vineyards are concerned that smoke taint from wildfires may impact the quality of the wine.
This represents France's third consecutive weak wine harvest, following low output in 2024 and 2025. To assist those affected, France has announced more than 1 billion euros in emergency support for farmers.
