Irish police have arrested a man and a woman after intercepting a highly sophisticated and extremely significant car bomb near the border with Northern Ireland. Members of the Garda Síochána’s special detective unit stopped the vehicle on the N2 south of Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, on Wednesday afternoon.
The interception occurred during an intelligence sweep targeting dissident republican groups. The two individuals are currently being questioned over possible offences against the state.
Ireland’s Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan described the seizure as very worrying.
