US and regional officials have announced a new ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah. This development follows an escalation in fighting that pressured a broader US-Iran deal calling for an end to hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon.
The ceasefire comes after the Israeli military announced the deaths of four soldiers killed in combat when their tank was hit during an operation near Kfar Tebnit. These represent the first Israeli losses announced since the initial US-Iran deal was signed to end the Middle East war. In response, Lebanese state news reported that the resulting strikes were among the heaviest in recent weeks.
The military losses sparked intense reactions within Israel. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir stated that all of Lebanon must burn, while the Israeli government vowed retribution. Meanwhile, Donald Trump called for Benjamin Netanyahu to be more responsible regarding the situation in Lebanon.
Despite the pressures, officials close to Netanyahu maintain that the Likud leader has no intention of giving up positions in Lebanon. He remains engaged in negotiations with the US following the announcement of the initial deal with Iran to halt hostilities.
