California designates Bruce Lee Day, first for Chinese American in state history

Bruce Lee, the martial arts icon born in San Francisco in 1940, will become the first Chinese American in California history to have an annual namesake day. Bruce Lee Day aims to honor the birthright citizen as an Asian-American icon and a cultural bridge.

State Assemblymember Matt Haney, who represents San Francisco, described Lee as the epitome of the best of California.

During the 1960s, Lee found work in Hollywood, most notably as Kato in the television series "The Green Hornet." However, he faced challenges during this time, as studios sought to cast him in racist stereotypes and paid him less than his white counterparts.
