A vessel carrying between 300 and 350 people capsized overnight on October 8-9 while sailing from Djibouti to Yemen. The shipwreck occurred near Guhere, leaving at least 109 migrants dead, including 15 children. More than 116 people remain missing.

Search and rescue operations were conducted following the disaster. More than 80 people survived the incident, all of whom are Ethiopian. The International Organization for Migration described the event as one of the deadliest shipwrecks ever recorded on the route to Yemen.

Tens of thousands of migrants travel from the Horn of Africa through Djibouti each year. These individuals seek to cross the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to Yemen as a pathway to eventually reach the Gulf countries.
