Luigi Mangione, the man accused of gunning down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan, plans to pursue a psychiatric defense during his upcoming state court trial. Judge Gregory Carro revealed the move during court proceedings on Wednesday.
Mangione's legal team intends to argue that he was suffering from an extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the occurrence. The judge disclosed the strategy during a discussion regarding the unsealing of records related to the defense's request.
If the defense team succeeds with this argument, Mangione could be convicted of a lesser charge. This outcome could potentially result in less prison time if he is convicted for the killing.
