Russia and Ukraine trade major attacks despite ceasefire and WWII celebrations

Russia and Ukraine are accusing each other of violating a two-day unilateral ceasefire announced by Moscow to mark the celebrations of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany. The agreement appears to be in tatters as both nations launched major attacks and fresh drone strikes, casting doubt on the implementation of the proposal.

Leading up to the ceasefire, eastern Ukraine experienced the worst Russian strikes of the year, which killed 27 people within a few hours. In response, Kyiv has intensified its strikes on Russian energy sites in recent weeks.

Russia's Defense Ministry reported that air defenses shot down 347 Ukrainian drones overnight, while other reports noted nearly 100 drones were destroyed in Russia before the ceasefire took effect. Earlier Friday, the Russian Defence Ministry stated that 264 Ukrainian drones had been downed.

Ukraine's air force reported that it downed 56 Russian drones close to the frontline in the last few hours, as both sides continue to trade accusations of ceasefire violations.
