Malaysia's jailed former Prime Minister Najib Razak has been granted a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his jail term under house arrest at a luxury home. The decision was reached during a Pardons Board meeting chaired by the Malaysian king on Friday, September 18.
Razak, a central figure in the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal, was convicted of embezzling millions. This royal intervention marks the latest chapter in one of the largest financial crimes of the century.
The pardon is conditional upon Razak paying a fine of 50 million ringgit, or approximately $12.3 million. The former premier had repeatedly sought clemency while serving a six-year jail sentence that lasts until August 23, 2028.
