Spain's left-wing government and the interior minister have called for calm in the North African enclave of Ceuta after protests over security escalated into clashes between local residents and police.
The unrest follows a mass influx of migrants from Morocco in late July, an event that triggered a Europe-wide alert. Of the more than 70,000 migrants who illegally crossed into the Spanish exclave, approximately 5,000 still remain, leading to anger and protests among Ceuta residents.
To manage the situation, Spain has requested assistance from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, to help process the migrants who remain in the enclave.
