U.S. sues New York Times claiming discrimination against a white man

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a discrimination lawsuit Tuesday against the New York Times. The federal civil rights agency and employment watchdog accuses the newspaper of violating federal law by passing over a white male journalist for a promotion.

The lawsuit alleges that the news organization denied the unidentified employee a sought-after promotion to a senior editorship. According to the EEOC, the newspaper instead chose a less-qualified woman for the position.

The complaint claims the decision was influenced by the New York Times' adherence to DEI policies and stated representation goals. The suit alleges the staffer was discriminated against based on race and/or sex to meet diversity goals, thereby violating civil rights law.
