The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly urged an end to the decades-long U.S. economic embargo on Cuba on Wednesday. The assembly approved a Cuban-sponsored resolution condemning the embargo for the 34th year, continuing a trend of similar resolutions approved almost every year since 1992.
The resolution received 130 votes in favor, with 17 against and 25 abstentions. While the vote was symbolic, support for the motion lessened. The number of countries opposing the resolution was the highest ever recorded, with several nations voting against the measure or abstaining for the first time in years.
This outcome follows a lobbying push by President Donald Trump’s administration to curb support and isolate Cuba. The U.S. pointed to the increase in abstentions as evidence that its campaign to isolate Cuba is slowly succeeding.
