Russian ballistic and cruise missiles, along with drones, struck the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and the surrounding region early Monday morning. This assault marked the second major attack on the city and its surroundings in less than a week, occurring on the eve of a NATO summit in Turkey.
Authorities reported that at least eight people were killed and dozens wounded. Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that a residential building in the historic Podil district was hit, with residents trapped on the seventh through ninth floors. Drone debris also fell on another residential building in the same area and in other districts of the city of 3 million. Rescue crews worked to pull residents from the shattered buildings.
The attack involved waves of missiles and drones, causing explosions to echo across the city while civilians sought shelter in metro stations. Air defenses were also in action to counter the drones.
This barrage follows a large-scale attack on Kyiv last Thursday, during which Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, killing at least 30 people. The increase in long-range attacks underscores the growing reach of the war more than four years after Russia's full-scale invasion.
