Austria is planning a ban on social media for children under 14, according to announcements made Friday by the country’s three-party government. The move comes as officials highlight concerns regarding addiction and potential ill-health effects on young people.
The proposed legislation aims to shield children from harmful content, including addictive algorithms and sexual abuse material found online.
In addition to the ban, Austria intends to incorporate digital competency classes into the school curriculum. This initiative positions Austria ahead of broader efforts within the European Union to safeguard children in the digital sphere.
