Reports say UK PM Starmer ready to quit as Burnham eyes bid to oust him

political figures leadership changes

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to resign on Monday and set out a timetable for his departure, according to the Observer newspaper. While senior Labour figures expect a clear statement on his future as early as Monday, a government source stated that Starmer remains focused on the job of governing.

The threat to Starmer's position increased sharply on Friday when rival Andy Burnham won a seat in parliament, allowing him to launch a formal leadership challenge. This pressure is compounded by more than 100 elected lawmakers in his party, representing roughly a quarter of all Labour representatives in the House of Commons, who have publicly called for him to quit or establish a timetable for his exit.

The Observer reported that Starmer concluded his position was no longer tenable after speaking with cabinet ministers, advisers, donors, and trade union leaders. He was reportedly discussing the matter with his wife at his Chequers country residence before making a final decision.

However, Starmer pledged during a public appearance in London that he would fight any challenge to his position. He has urged the Labour party not to tear itself apart with infighting.
