A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei area, also known as the Phlegraean Fields, near the southern Italian city of Naples on Friday at 7.46pm. This event marks the strongest quake to hit the region in 40 years.
The earthquake resulted in at least 21 injuries and forced the evacuation of more than 250 people. Damage was reported to buildings, churches, and a pier within the site of Europe’s largest volcanic crater.
The disaster caused widespread power outages and disrupted public transport, specifically impacting train and metro services.
Italy’s civil protection minister, Nello Musumeci, has urged caution and warned that the volcanic activity is not yet over.
