The U.S. government has begun issuing the first wave of tariff refunds after the Supreme Court ruled that some of President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs were unlawfully imposed and unconstitutional.

According to a Tuesday court filing, the U.S. customs agency had processed $35.46 billion in refunds, including interest, as of May 11. These funds are being issued to importers who successfully filed for refunds after the president's signature economic policy was found unlawful.

The government must return approximately $160 billion, plus interest, collected from duties deemed illegal. This total could potentially increase if the government loses a related tariff case.
