FIFA has implemented a last-minute change to its Stadium Code of Conduct, banning attendees from bringing reusable water bottles into World Cup venues. This policy reversal applies to all tournament stadiums and now prohibits empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles, which were previously permitted. Other prohibited items include cups, jars, and cans to prevent the risk of injury if thrown.
The governing body stated that the decision was made on safety grounds to protect the health and safety of players, referees, fans, volunteers, and staff. FIFA noted that outside bottles were already prohibited at several venues for safety considerations, and the organization is now applying this rule across all tournament stadiums.
The move has raised concerns among supporters regarding access to drinking water and coping with heat, as temperatures at some venues are expected to range between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius. FIFA said it is working with Host City Committees and local authorities on heat mitigation factors around the stadium footprint, including the use of cooling tents, misting stations, fans, and hydration stations. Inside the stadiums, water bottle pricing will remain consistent with other events.
The 48-team World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, will run from June 11 to July 19. The tournament will feature 104 matches, up from 64 previously, and will include an additional knockout round.
