Iga Swiatek captured the Canadian Open title in Toronto on Thursday, defeating second-seeded Elena Rybakina 6-2, 6-3. This victory marks the six-time Grand Slam champion's first WTA Tour title of the year and her 26th overall.
The seventh-seeded Swiatek was sharp and fast on the hard court, breaking Rybakina’s serve early to take the opening set in just 29 minutes. While Rybakina leads the tour in aces, she struggled to find her rhythm throughout the evening. Swiatek maintained a consistent attack with few errors and excellent range, keeping the Kazakh player on her heels.
Swiatek reached the final after a three-set battle against Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, rallying from a break down in the deciding set to win 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Svitolina and Coco Gauff both exited the tournament in the semifinals to make way for the final.
The victory provides a confidence boost for the Pole heading into the U.S. Open. Additionally, Swiatek is projected to move up two spots to sixth in the new world rankings.
