King Haakon VIII swore an oath of allegiance before Norway’s parliament on Tuesday, pledging to uphold the country's 1814 constitution and laws. This event marks the first major institutional step in the passing of the crown following the death of his father, King Harald V, who died Friday at the age of 89 after 35 years on the throne.

Wearing a ceremonial uniform, the new monarch was accompanied by his 22-year-old daughter, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra. However, Queen Mette-Marit was unable to attend the ceremony due to complications following a lung transplant.

King Haakon VIII has adopted the motto "All for Norway," a phrase that dates back to his great-grandfather, Haakon VII.
