President Donald Trump has fired the remaining members of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, an independent, bipartisan agency responsible for helping states administer accurate elections. The White House confirmed the dismissals on Thursday, leaving the commission without any active members.
Of the three remaining commissioners, two Democratic appointees were notified of their terminations via email from the White House presidential personnel office, while the single Republican appointee resigned. These actions take place just a few months before the upcoming midterm elections.
The commission, which maintains the mail-voter registration form among other duties, has seen the move condemned by Democrats and voting rights advocates. It remains unclear how President Trump will move ahead with the commission.
