U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents shot and wounded a 28-year-old Dominican man in New York City on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx, also described as an Upper Manhattan neighborhood. The man was shot in the neck as he drove his SUV with a 5-year-old boy, believed to be his son, in the back seat.
The Department of Homeland Security, the parent agency of ICE, stated the shooting took place during a targeted immigration enforcement operation to make an arrest. Eyewitnesses reported hearing three or four gunshots and seeing masked officers wearing Department of Homeland Security branded clothing surrounding the injured man on the ground. The man was subsequently hospitalized.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the incident as an outrage and urged Donald Trump to end all ICE enforcement actions in the city. While federal immigration officials defended the agents involved, protesters and local officials decried the shooting as an example of the dangers of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.
