A bipartisan housing bill, known as the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, is set to become law at midnight Friday regardless of whether President Donald Trump signs it. The legislation, which passed the House and Senate with strong bipartisan support in June, aims to address the costs of homes and rein in institutional investors.
President Trump has refused to sign the sweeping housing package, stating he is withholding his signature in protest over the fact that the United States Senate has not passed the SAVE America Act. The president urged lawmakers to instead focus on the voter-ID bill he has prioritized.
The president had 10 days to sign the bill, issue a veto, or allow the measure to take effect without his signature. While Trump has not stated whether he intends to veto the legislation, it will become law automatically if he takes no further action by the Friday deadline.
