Anthropic PBC has previewed the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a new software standard designed to enable artificial intelligence agents to control machines. Developed in collaboration with the medical research institute HHMI, the standard allows AI assistants such as Claude to work more effectively with robots and science and manufacturing hardware, including equipment like microscopes.
The MHS functions by storing information that helps artificial intelligence assistants understand how a piece of hardware operates. Although developed by Anthropic, the standard is designed to work with any AI model, not just Claude.
The Model Hardware Standard is currently available as a research preview for a limited number of companies. Anthropic has indicated that it plans to open source the standard in the future.
