A bipartisan delegation of Japanese parliamentarians has arrived in Beijing for a four-day visit starting Monday. The cross-party group traveled to China to meet with senior officials of the Chinese Communist Party.
The visit represents a tentative step toward renewed political engagement as Tokyo attempts to defrost its worst rift with China in decades. Relations between the two nations were strained last year following remarks regarding Taiwan made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, which angered Beijing.
This meeting marks the first such exchange since the Prime Minister's comments. However, it is expected that the interactions between the lawmakers may have only a limited impact on repairing the official relationship between the two governments.
