Major publishers sue Meta for copyright infringement over AI training

technology internet legal proceedings

Five publishing houses, including Cengage Learning, Hachette, Macmillan, and McGraw, along with author Scott Turow, are suing Meta and CEO Mark Zuckerberg for copyright infringement.

The plaintiffs allege that Meta pirated works ranging from textbooks and scientific articles to novels. The lawsuit claims that Meta's Llama is generating summaries and, in some cases, verbatim copies of these original works.

Additionally, the plaintiffs allege that Mark Zuckerberg personally authorized and actively encouraged the copyright infringement. The publishers and Turow are now demanding a jury trial to review their claims.
