FIFA Mandates Female Coaches in Women’s Tournaments

FIFA has implemented new regulations requiring all teams participating in its women’s competitions to include at least one female head coach or assistant coach. The policy applies to both senior and youth levels, aiming to increase opportunities for women in coaching roles.

The move comes after the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where only 10 of 32 teams were led by a female head coach. FIFA’s Chief Football Officer, Jill Ellis, stated the need to “accelerate change” and create clearer pathways for women on the sidelines.

The new rule mirrors a similar approach taken by UEFA, where women’s teams without a female head coach are required to appoint a female assistant coach. This initiative seeks to expand globally the progress already seen in more developed women’s soccer regions.
