Germany Fights Nicaragua's Gaza Genocide Case at Top UN Court

united nations legal proceedings

Germany has asked the International Court of Justice to dismiss a case brought by Nicaragua accusing Berlin of facilitating genocide in Gaza. The case centers on Germany's support and supply of arms to Israel following the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas militants.

Germany told the United Nations' top court that the case, which alleges a violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention, was improperly filed. Although the specific details of the filing have not yet been made public, Germany is challenging the claims regarding its weapons sales.

The court could either side with Germany and throw out the case completely or rule against Berlin. If the court rules against Germany, the case would then be considered on the merits in more detail.
