An Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon around 2 p.m., striking multiple vehicles and bursting into flames. The Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air as Prime Air Flight 7598, had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky as the aircraft came to rest beside a roadway, where it struck several vehicles, including two semi-trucks.
Officials reported that at least five people were killed and five others injured in the crash. Of the injured, three are in critical condition, while two others were hospitalized with less severe injuries. Approximately 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the scene to extinguish the fire. Miami Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz stated there was no apparent threat to public safety following the incident.
The crash forced the closure of all runways and taxiways at the busy travel hub, resulting in a ground stop where all flights were put on hold. The Federal Aviation Administration expected flight delays as the airport reopened with a low rate of arrivals and departures. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently gathering information to determine the cause of the crash, and Amazon did not immediately return an email seeking comment.
