Moldova's Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his surprise resignation on Friday, July 3. After serving just eight months in office, Munteanu stated in a post on X that he chose to step down because he could no longer carry out his mandate in accordance with his principles and convictions.
The resignation comes as pressure has intensified over a corruption scandal involving a state-owned air traffic management company. Munteanu's announcement also triggers the resignation of the government.
President Maia Sandu said a successor would be appointed quickly in order to continue Moldova's pro-EU course. Sandu stated she would begin consultations with the country's political parties on Monday to select a new prime minister.
