A federal appeals court has ruled that more than 3,000 lawsuits against social media companies, including Meta, TikTok, Google, and Snap, can move forward. This ruling, which follows a lower court decision, could open the door to a flood of litigation against these social media players.
The Ninth Circuit ruled that Section 230 was designed to shield tech giants from user posts, but not from claims that Meta, Google, and TikTok built platforms designed to addict users. As a result, platforms like Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, and Google now face a long road of litigation.
In the first lawsuit to go to trial in the California litigation, a Los Angeles jury found Meta and Google negligent for designing social media platforms that harm young people. Meta is set to head to trial this week regarding child safety as these companies face ongoing addiction lawsuits.
