The U.S. Army announced Wednesday its plan to install nuclear microreactors at five military bases spanning from New York to Texas. These facilities are intended to serve as a reliable source of energy, ensuring the bases remain independent of the commercial electric grid.
This initiative is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to spur the country’s largest expansion of nuclear power in more than three decades.
Five companies selected by the Army will be awarded up to $2.2 billion in total over five years to own, construct, and operate the microreactors, provided they meet set performance milestones.
More than 20 reactors will be installed within five years, with at least one expected to go into service by the end of September 2028.
