Democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George is slated to become the next mayor of Washington DC after her opponent conceded on Thursday. A current member of the City Council, Lewis George is likely to take the top spot in November's general election.
With approximately two-thirds of the vote counted and 64% of ballots processed, Lewis George holds a significant edge over her nearest rival, Kenyan McDuffie. She will replace moderate Muriel Bowser, who decided not to run again after serving three terms.
Lewis George ran on a platform of expanding childcare, education, and housing, as well as revoking the district’s cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Her strong showing could put the city in Trump's crosshairs.
