A passenger train traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw was struck by a Russian drone on Sunday morning, just two kilometers from the Polish border. While no casualties were reported in the strike on the locomotive, Poland and Ukraine condemned the incident as an escalation of the war and part of a systemic attack on the country's railways.
The strike occurred amid a wider wave of overnight attacks across Ukraine involving more than 450 Russian drones and missiles. These attacks left at least six people dead and more than 40 others injured. Ukraine’s air force reported that it intercepted 405 drones and four missiles.
Ukraine’s foreign minister described the incident as Putin’s terror knocking directly on the doors of the EU and Nato. Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was at a nearby border train station with former US CIA director David Petraeus around the time of the attack, questioned the warped logic that drove the destruction of a stationary locomotive.
Ukraine’s rail operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, stated that it is continuing to monitor aerial threats and taking every possible measure to ensure the safety of railway staff and passengers while ensuring the smooth running of trains.
