Senegal Approves Harsher Anti-LGBTQ+ Law, Up to 10 Years Prison
Senegal’s parliament has approved a law increasing penalties for homosexuality. The legislation doubles the maximum prison sentence for same-sex relations to 10 years. It also criminalizes the promotion or financing of homosexuality. The bill passed with a significant majority, 135 votes in favor with three abstentions, and now awaits President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s signature. Fines for related offenses have been raised to a maximum of 10 million CFA francs. The new law also includes provisions against falsely accusing individuals of homosexual acts. Reports indicate dozens have been arrested since February, and rallies supporting the law have been organized by groups promoting Islamic values. The legislation fulfills a campaign promise made by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
