Pope Leo XIV traveled to Monaco on Saturday, marking the first papal visit to the principality in nearly five centuries. The one-day trip, the pontiff’s first to Europe since his election, has surprised some observers given the city-state’s reputation for wealth and leisure.
The Pope arrived by helicopter and was greeted by Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene before a scheduled meeting with the Prince. He is also set to meet with young people and those preparing for baptism, and will celebrate Mass at the Stade Louis-II.
The Vatican stated the visit will highlight the global influence of small states, focusing on diplomacy, the “defence of life,” and international cooperation regarding issues like war. Pope Leo is expected to encourage the people of Monaco to utilize their faith and resources positively.
