Zelenskyy rejects wartime elections as risky and details defense minister rift

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sharply criticized proposals to hold elections during the wartime conflict, describing such a move as a "tsunami" that would "destroy" and "split" Ukraine. The president pushed back against demands for a vote, arguing that the process would be impractical while active fighting with Russia continues.

The dispute follows a political crisis triggered by the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. After being fired, Fedorov publicly called for the organization of a vote and became involved in protests. Zelenskyy characterized these actions as misguided.

Zelenskyy highlighted severe security risks, noting that Russia is amassing ballistic missiles and considering the mobilization of an additional 300,000 troops following September polls. He stated that the proposal for elections is impractical given that Russia appears to have no interest in a ceasefire.

Currently, Ukraine has suspended elections under martial law, a measure that is widely supported by the population.
